Breaking the Silence Around Infertility

Mufaro Foundation

At Mufaro Foundation, we understand the profound impact infertility has on individuals and families. In Zimbabwe, where Shona culture places strong emphasis on childbearing, women facing infertility often endure deep social stigmatization. The pressure to conceive can lead to shame, isolation, and marginalization. With one in every seven couples facing infertility, the silence surrounding this reality remains overwhelming. Women are often blamed while men are absolved of responsibility. We believe infertility is a shared challenge that requires compassion, understanding, and support. Our mission is to break the silence, challenge stigma, and create a safe space for individuals and families navigating infertility.

Understanding the Weight of Silence

Our Story

Infertility is more than a medical condition; it is an emotional and social journey that affects relationships, identity, and wellbeing. Many women suffer quietly under societal expectations and judgment, carrying guilt that should never have been theirs. At Mufaro Foundation, we confront this silence directly. We create spaces where women can speak openly, share honestly, and find strength in community. By shifting the narrative from blame to support, we are building a movement rooted in dignity, empathy, and shared understanding.

Our objective is to provide holistic transformation for people living with infertility from disadvantaged communities by offering:

Z

Training that equips and builds confidence

Z

Empowerment that restores dignity and purpose

Z

Exposure to life-changing innovations and opportunities

Creating Safe Spaces for Women

What We Do

We design programs and gatherings that provide knowledge, healing, and connection. Every initiative is centered on ensuring women feel heard, supported, and valued. Our work includes:

Educational workshops addressing physical, emotional & psychological aspects of infertility, helping women learn in a safe space and feel supported through the full journey.

Community campaigns that raise awareness and challenge stigma, sharing information and hope while encouraging communities to move from blame to understanding.

Support groups and counselling sessions, both in-person and online, offering judgment-free connection, encouragement, and emotional support wherever women are.

Media outreach to amplify real stories and foster public dialogue, bringing infertility into the open so more women reach support and conversations become healthier.

Through these efforts, we are building a supportive community where no woman feels alone in her journey.

Extending Care Beyond Infertility

Community Outreach

Our work extends beyond awareness. In collaboration with partners, we support vulnerable children and young women through community initiatives. In Domboshava, we conducted a pad campaign and menstrual hygiene sessions, providing sanitary wear and clothing donations.

Restoring dignity through access to basic necessities

Breaking stigma around menstrual health

Empowering young girls with knowledge and confidence

Creating opportunities without interruption to education

This reflects our broader commitment to empowerment, access, and community wellbeing.

Wellness & Support Gatherings

We believe healing also happens in moments of fellowship and shared experience. From educational meetups to Zumba wellness sessions, our gatherings allow women to unwind, release stress, and reconnect with joy. These spaces foster sisterhood, encouragement, and solidarity, reminding every participant that infertility does not define their worth or limit their potential.

Mental Health Awareness

Infertility can bring feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, guilt, and isolation. During Mental Health Awareness Month, we emphasized that a woman’s value is not defined by motherhood. Through counselling, online discussions, and supportive messaging, we continue to rewrite the narrative around infertility — affirming that every woman deserves compassion, dignity & respect.

Creating Safe Spaces for Women

The Mufaro Centre

Our dream project, the Mufaro Centre, is underway. Designed to host counselling sessions, vocational training, support groups, and community activities, it will become a dedicated safe space for women and vulnerable community members.

The centre will serve as a place for:

Z

Counselling and emotional support

Z

Vocational training and skills development

Z

Support group meetups

Z

Community empowerment activities

While key areas such as roofing and plastering remain unfinished, completing this centre is crucial to expanding our ability to serve and uplift the community.

From Blame to Support

Stories of Impact

Behind every program is a real story of courage and transformation. One such story is that of Tarisai and Norman Chinorumba, a couple who lived with infertility for 20 years. Before connecting with Mufaro Foundation, they struggled with emotional pain, misunderstanding, and isolation. Tarisai carried the burden of blame, while Norman felt helpless and frustrated.

After attending a Mufaro campaign and training, their perspective shifted. They learned that infertility is a shared experience and that blame only deepens emotional wounds. Through knowledge, emotional empowerment, and community support, they rebuilt their communication and became each other’s strength.

“Mufaro has been a game-changer for us. We’ve learned to communicate more effectively and support each other in ways we never thought possible. We’re no longer alone in this journey.”

The centre will serve as a place for:

Z

Infertility is never one person’s fault

Z

Support and education can transform relationships

Z

No couple should face this journey alone
